Gluten Free in the Atlanta Airport

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport:

Gluten Free Food Options

photo (1)

A few years ago, had I written this post, it would have been filled with disappointment and a lot more empty space. I am proud to say that this Delta Airlines hub has made huge improvements in their restaurants offering gluten free items since that time. If you find a new restaurant, or notice that one has closed, please comment below to let me know. The airport is constantly adding new restaurants and switching out old ones so it can be hard to keep up! I hope this helps serves as a guide to navigating what can be a very large and stressful airport, during difficult times for those with food allergies/ intolerances.

*The options with asterisks are my favorites.

**Those with 2 asterisks are the safest for celiacs, based on my experience.

Note: Not all options on this list have been verified, and ingredients always change, as does employee knowledge and level of cross contamination. Use this list as a guide, but always speak up and ask about cross contamination and current ingredients.

Delta Airlines

Delta does offer gluten free options for first class meals, if you call and request it several days ahead of time. I believe you can do it online when you make the reservation as well. You can always get a special (food allergy, vegetarian) meal if you are departing from ATL and most major airports, however, some small airports, such as mine in Tucson, will not provide catering for gluten free diets. Delta is pretty good about having the meals, but I always check right when I get on the plane, because they have forgotten, leaving me starving. One time I got on the plane and found out they didn’t get my meal, ran (literally ran) off the plane and down to the food court to grab some food and got back on before they left. They have ~3 different options total (only one option per flight) and usually include a wrapped Udi’s roll. The ones pictured below had chicken salad, grilled chicken with sauce and veggies, egg white omelet for breakfast, fruit, salad, and Udi’s roll, Udi’s cookie, or an Udi’s muffin. **The tray will have a little piece of paper with “GFML” (gluten-free meal) on your tray, so make sure it has that.**

    • I’m so sorry you aren’t feeling well Theresa! I have gotten sick from Chipotle a number of times myself and actually avoid it when I can. It’s so important they change gloves, utensils, and get new pans out, but even then there is always a risk. Thank you for commenting and I’m sending you happy thoughts of no pain!

      • Hi Bret! Thank you for your comment & sharing your experience. Apparently they need some better staff training at that location, because I contacted corporate after reading your comment and recieved this today (2/17/15)
        “Hi Emily,

I’ve attached the decal we apply in stores. The smoothies and yogurts are gluten free.

        Thank you,
        Freshens Customer Support”

The decal says nonfat vanilla yogurt, nonfat chocolate yogurt, tart yogurt, and all smoothies are gluten free. (Obviously with the exception of add-Ins containing gluten.) The staff member in Atlanta may have been referring to cross contamination which is always a concern, but otherwise, the yogurt itself should definitely be gluten free!

Thanks for your comment, Bret, so we could address this!

  7. Thank you so much for the great website! We have a 5 hour layover in Atlanta soon after an international flight and have never been to that airport, so it is a great help. Don’t have to pack so many GF granola bars to carry around now.

  8. Thank you so much for your post!! My family and I will be in Atlanta next month and need to eat gluten free. Since this is a new airport for us, I wasn’t sure what options were available. I can’t tell you what a relief it is to know we will be able to eat more than the protein bars we always bring with us 🙂

  9. Cafe Intermezzo at the center of Terminal B has a gluten free menu. Can get a little busy at times, but staff very conscientious and helpful. I usually get the kale salad with salmon or shrimp.

  10. You can cross Willy’s Mexicana Grill off the list. This location is limited menu and doesn’t offer corn tortillas at all.
